Navigation in Maya

- [Instructor] A lot of the work in Maya happens in what's called a viewport. That's where we see our geometry and the scenes that we're creating. So here I have a large perspective viewport, and if I want to navigate, all I need is a keyboard and a three-button mouse. Now, you might be able to get by with a track pad or maybe a two-button mouse on a Macintosh, but I highly recommend a three-button mouse. So let me show you how to navigate with a three button mouse. It's basically just one keyboard key and one mouse button. Now the keyboard key is either the Alt key or the Option key on the Mac keyboard. So you hit Alt or Option, and if you left click, you can orbit, or rotate the view. If you Alt or Option and right click, you can do what's called a truck, which basically moves the camera towards or away from the center of the scene. Now, if you have a middle mouse wheel, you can also roll that wheel to get that same effect. Now, Alt or Option and middle click allows you to pan. So…

FAQs

Can I learn Maya? ›

To get the most out of the software, go slow and start with the basics. It's normal for complex software programs like Maya to have a steep learning curve, and you have to give yourself time to understand how Maya works. One of the best ways to learn Maya is by watching basic tutorials.

What is the 3 key in Maya? ›

Press the 3 key to display the selected polygonal mesh in this mode. Only the smoothed preview version of the mesh is displayed in this mode. You select and edit components on the smoothed preview when working in this mode.

How do I navigate in Maya graph editor? ›

Use the square bracket hotkeys ([ and ]). These are the same hotkeys that let you move between camera views in the viewport. To navigate through views using these hotkeys, click in the Graph Editor then press left bracket ([) to move to the previous view, or right bracket (]) to move to the next view.
