Genres and types are an important aspect when making a game, as each game can only have one of each, and which ones you choose can greatly affect sales. Genres and types all have unique "popularity" with consumers, and the cost to produce a game in any genre or type varies. The key to using genre and types effectively is to combine complimentary subjects to create combos. Each combo receives a basic rating, ranging from "Not good" to "Amazing!", to measure how successful your combo is. This plays a key role in making a top-selling game.
Genres are unlocked by leveling up employees to a specific level or higher in a specific career. You can also hire someone who already has obtained this level to unlock it. Unlocking types requires employees at or above a certain level to use specific training methods.

- Space and Jumprope are inaccessible in the game as there is an unused training method, Retreat. They would have been unlocked by the designer and the coder by going to the Retreat. This can be seen in the game's code. [1]
