The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication Review (PS5) – The Bridge Curse is an exciting franchise that spans movies and games. Though the two aren’t based on each other, they occur in the same universe and feature the same horror and monster elements.

The Bridge Curse 2 takes what the movie presented and elaborates on the haunted school you can explore. Though it tells a decent story, it’s not full of many scares.

A Compelling Narrative

The Bridge Curse 2 follows multiple characters trapped in a haunted school. After a school movie project trailer about an infamous murder in the school is released online, fans notice a ghost hand in the footage, making everyone wonder if it’s real or just for show.

The game starts with a journalist who heads to the school to interview the young filmmakers about this mysterious hand. This, of course, doesn’t go how she planned, and she is quickly forced to run for her life as she is chased by a mysterious entity that has her head dangling behind her body, almost decapitated, known as the Neckless Consort.

The game jumps between four characters’ perspectives: the journalist and the three filmmaker students. The stories occur parallel to each other as you experience events from multiple perspectives at the exact moment.

I enjoyed the story; it was well presented, with many backstories to events and characters. The school has various hauntings, and though each one may seem random, they connect with the overall evil presence haunting the school.

Multiple Characters Experience A Different Though Connected Haunting

Each character has a mystery that uncovers portions of the main story and what’s been happening in the school. Though the story gets a little fantastical heading into the second half, it still holds some surprises.

Most of the game sees you exploring the school, trying to find your friends who have been separated. They begin to unlock the mysteries of the school and the secrets it holds. There are parts where characters are even transported back in time to specific events that transpired at that time.

Secret rooms and mysterious puzzles to solve hinder your progress. The puzzles themselves aren’t that difficult to solve, and most require simple comprehension and problem-solving. I wish they were as complex as this year’s White Day 2, but they get the job done.

Subpar Chase Sequences

Some characters get a mysterious lantern that can banish and push evil spirits away. It can also uncover hidden objects in the environment from another time. This is an interesting mechanic, but it only works for the story.

Each character will also have their own “escape from sequence” where they have to run or sneak past something chasing them. I wasn’t a fan of these as most of them are simple and easy to get past.

The pursuers are primarily slow, and you can run circles around them. One of them you do because you have to wait for your lantern to recharge to clear a path. The lantern also pushes your pursuer away for a short time, but you must wait for it to recharge before using it again.

Unquie Boss Encounter Stands Out From The Rest Of The Pack

The Neckless Consort is the most memorable pursuer and plays a significant role in the story. The other and most memorable is the Mad Ballerina, which features a unique boss encounter that plays like a game of Red-Light-Green-Light.

The Ballerina will possess mannequins trying to reach you in a round room, as you try to get as much distance as possible between the mannequins. It was a very tense and nerve-racking encounter.

The visuals are good, but the school is littered with details, even though there isn’t much to interact with. The character animations and monster designs also stand out. Voice acting is surprisingly good, and the music plays to the tense moments very well.

The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication is a good game from a small studio looking to embark on a larger scale of game development. Though the sequel has nothing to do with the Bridge Curse featured in the first game, it’s simply a title for what looks to be a franchise that mixes live-action motion pictures and video games. It feels ambitious, and it works well for a small Taiwanese developer.

I enjoyed The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication primarily because of the story and entertaining characters.

Though some parts are better than others, as a whole, it’s a good package that fans of Asian horror and storytelling will undoubtedly enjoy.

The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication is now available on PS5 and PS4.
