Today I’m going to show you a project I recently made for one of my friends who is about to be a new mom. I’m going to show you How To Make Baby Burp Cloths! When my mother-in-law first gifted my husband and I a large box of handmade burp cloths, I thought she was insane. As first-time parents, we were wondering how we were going to be able to go through all those burp cloths with just one baby. Well, it only took about two full days after bringing baby girl home before we had to do a full load of laundry with just burp cloths. No one tells you how many babies go through! This simple little sewing project is an easy one to crank out so you can make a whole stash of these in about half an hour. I found some fun print fabric, but you could use whatever you have on hand. I even made some of these for some friends that just started fostering and they loved them. Plus, you can use them for other things as your little one grows.
Today we will go over how to make these with some scrap fabric. This easy project is perfect for moms-to-be or for baby shower gifts.
What You’ll Need:
- 1/3 yard patterned fabric
- 1/3 yard minky, flannel, terry cloth*, or some other soft fabric.
- Thread to match
- Free Pattern
- Ironor heat press
- Thread Clippers
- Sewing Clips
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Measuring tape
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler
- Sewing Machine
*Towels are made from terry cloth, so if you have some old towels hanging around or find a great deal on some cheap towels, you can use that as the terry cloth fabric.
How To Make Baby Burp Cloths
Step 1: Cut Out Fabric
The first step in this how to make baby burp cloths sewing tutorial is to by washing, drying, and pressing your fabric. I find this makes it easier to cut as the fabric is nice and flat, plus the process acts as a preshrink for your fabric so your stitches don’t get messed up the first time you wash your baby bip, which you will do often. Once you have done that, use the included free pattern to cut out your fabric. If you have a rotary cutter and cutting mat, you can even choose to cut both at the same time. I am using scrap fabric, so have decided to cut the fabrics separately. If you are cutting both at the same time, lay down the patterned fabric flat on the cutting mat and then place the soft fabric on top.
Step 2: Sew Two Pieces Together
Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together. This means the sides you eventually want on the outside of the burp cloth should be facing each other. Pin or clip the two pieces together.
Next on this easy sew baby burp cloths sewing tutorial, you will sew the two pieces together using a straight stitch with a 3/8” seam allowance. Make sure that you leave about a 2” gap so that you can flip the burp cloth right side out eventually. It is easiest to flip it if you leave the gap in the middle of one of the longest pieces.
Step 3: Cut Corners and Flip Right Side Out
Before flipping, cut off the extra fabric in the corners so that when it is flipped it will not have a lot of bulk in the corners.
Next, flip the burp cloth right side out through the opening. You may choose to iron or press the burp cloth flat if you would like.
Step 4: Topstitch Around Burp Cloth
Before topstitching around the burp cloth, make sure that you fold the fabric inside at the gap to be even with the rest of the sides. Pin this section so that when you topstitch it gets sewn together.
Next on this diy baby burp cloth tutorial, topstitch all around the burp cloth using about a 3/8” seam allowance. You may choose to use decorative stitches while topstitching this section or even put some decorative trim on the burp cloth.
That’s it! Now you know how to make baby burp cloths! Making burp cloths is so easy that you can quickly make a whole set in less time than it takes going to the store and buying them!
