My time at Harrison High School, a small public institution of learning in the woods of Northern Michigan, provided me everything I needed to be successful in a viable career path in the world's greatest Air Force! I can't think of another option I had that would have offered me the opportunities I've had the past 20 years. https://lnkd.in/gN59wPsn

As we celebrate the achievement of our high school graduates, it's essential to look beyond the graduation rate. This is particularly important when we consider the issue of disconnected youth—individuals aged 16-24 who are neither in school nor working.Measure of America reports that 12.2% of youth in our region and 11.9% in Broward County, about 23,600 young people, are disconnected. While we rightly applaud the hard work of students who complete high school, we must also consider the critical question: What happens after graduation? We need to focus on how we are supporting their transition into the workforce.Students need to be aware of the multiple pathways to high-wage careers, whether through college, trades, military service, or direct employment. Our goal is to ensure that they are equipped and encouraged to pursue one of these productive paths, thereby avoiding the pitfall of doing nothing. We need to shift the conversation from merely celebrating graduation to promoting ongoing learning and workforce readiness. It's time to bring attention to the value of workforce education in supporting our youth's journey to becoming successful and contributing members of our community. If we truly want to add value, we must focus on post-secondary learning outcomes rather than just celebrating completion outputs. #Workforce #Education #Careers #College #Trades #Military #Employment #FutureLeaders #Community #Success #Learning #Outcomes #Support #Graduation #YouthDevelopment

What’s my WHY⁉️ In 2018 I volunteered at a Veterans homeless Stand Down, and ran into a person I was stationed with 12 years earlier…unfortunately they were enrolled in HUDVASH and weren’t one of the other volunteers.

I was going to post about something else, but I’ve had a few people reach out about U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits. There’s several programs….I mean several. Are you active duty?A reservist?Eligible for post 9/11?Eligible for the entire amount?Have you actually swapped over?Is it better than the old Montgomery?…believe it or not, sometimes it’s not!Do the math.(I had several cases the last few months)Are you using 9/11 + the programs that go with it?Do you have your COE?Are you a Veteran who is eligible for DEA?….yep, that’s a thing. Are you planning on going to school?Get reimbursed for a license or cert test.Seek a duel degree (even graduate) using the STEM scholarship. It can be done!Need a career counselor? What about a tutor?Yep, all these things are possible.DecisionsDecisionsDecisions Long story short, understanding the basics of your benefits and how to use them are vital.*this guide is a little older - still applicable, I’m just waiting for the updated one.You better call Tyrone

This is huge. Understanding how this affects you and your dependents leads you to paying out of pocket less and same for your dependents. If you are still in and you haven't used all your Post 9/11 and haven't transferred them to your dependents, you need to do so. Take a look at what college costs. Average college costs for a 4 year degree per Business insider at https://lnkd.in/gdHB46pQ. Average 2021-2022 annual tuition for public, four-year colleges was $10,740 for state residents, and $27,560 for out-of-state residents, according toCollegeBoarddata. On average, annual room and board costs added $11,950 to the cost of college. The average undergraduate student took out $6,470 of subsidized and unsubsidized student loans during the period.

I am both a lifelong learner and a champion of people who take on the journey of continued learning and development. This story of a fellow New Yorker's triumph over the unknown and self-value is inspiring. The article highlights the transformative power of education for veterans, showing how universities can pave the way for a new sense of purpose and direction. It's a good read. 🌟Empowering the Next Mission🌟In the lifelong service and commitment journey, transitioning from military to civilian life is a pivotal chapter for our military-connected learners.🎓💼It's not just about finding a new career; it's about continuing to make a difference. That's where the power of postsecondary education comes into play. It's more than earning a diploma, degree or certification; it's about shaping futures, unlocking opportunities, and enabling our military-connected students to apply their invaluable skills in new, impactful ways.🚀Why Postsecondary Education is KEY:1. Skill Transformation: Converting military expertise into civilian career excellence.2. Career Advancement: Opening doors to higher-paying, fulfilling job opportunities.3. Post-military Growth: Fostering critical thinking, leadership, and adaptability in a new environment. 4. Community Impact: Equipping military-connected learners to contribute to society dynamically.📚Developing a Military-Connected Learner Strategy:It's imperative that educational institutions tailor their programs to meet the unique needs of military learners. This means flexible learning schedules, supportive services, credit for prior military learning, and a community that understands and values their service.Canadian postsecondary institutions face significant challenges due to imposed restrictions, where efforts can be directed to consider a long-standing, underrepresented student population. Together, we can ensure that our military-connected learners have the tools they need to succeed in their post-service lives. releasepointeducation.ca Colleges Ontario Colleges and Institutes Canada | Collèges et instituts Canada Universities Canada Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes Veterans Affairs Canada / Anciens Combattants Canada Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services The Royal Canadian Legion #VeteransEducation #MilitaryConnectedLearners #PostsecondarySuccess #EmpowermentThroughEducation

#Veterans are not your typical college students. Many juggle careers, families and the integration from military service to civilian life while pursuing a degree. That's why they are gravitating to #careercolleges — these schools offer flexible schedules, career-applicable coursework, and personalized programming. And what's more, career colleges are a good value for veterans to get the most out of their earned education benefits.Read more insights from NDC's "Condescending Paternalism" report: https://lnkd.in/grD56sFR#VeteransEducation #VeteransBenefits

👇 Mind the Military-Civilian Gap 👇With more and more service members exiting service, and the push for student diversity on campus, why aren't more universities focusing harder on the student veteran and military-connected population? Not only does it meet diversity goals, it also infuses federal dollars into the university. Read some further thoughts supporting this in the linked article.“With many colleges struggling financially, investing in student veterans is as much a strategic business decision as it is the right thing to do.”~Wesley Wilson, Director of the Military and Veterans Resource Center, Georgetown Universityhttps://lnkd.in/ggeA6TSd
