I've been playing all morning and finally beat the first boss having a blast, but somewhere along the way, I noticed my beard was missing, and upon closer inspection, my character seems to have mysteriously switched genders.

I assume this is a bug or something? My rugged ranger man is now a homely woman. I actually went through my item descriptions to see if something I equipped was cursed or something like that belt in Baulders Gate.

Did you hide in a coffin at any point? This happened to me and that was the last thing I did before dying and coming back a lady.

Yeah I did. An unmarked sexual reassignment coffin. Fantastic.

I'm still rolling around with my 4 vit swordsman with no shield, after about 15 tries last night I beat the Pursuer, here is my advice for that fight: Always, always dodge to his shield side (your right), most of his attacks will go over your head. His charging swipe, and the glowy sword impale are the safest moves to get some damage in on.

I saw some advice to farm large titanite, but is there any place to farm small shards?

Sorry if this has been answered already but this thread moves really fast. In the OP it says that I can buy infinite small titanite shards from a certain vendor, but on my game she only had 10 of them. I don't have internet at my house ATM, so I couldn't patch the game, is this the reason?

Kill more bosses. She does sell infinite small shards, but only once you've killed enough bosses.

One more quick question. I'm at the second boss in Earthen Peak. Is there an item to mitigate the poison damage? I don't need specifics on where it is, just if it exists, and I'll go explore somewhere else instead of slamming my head against the wall.

Holy poo poo, finally beat the ruin sentinels. What a bunch of assholes. Had the NPC Pilgram (who casts some awesome magic which does a lot of damage) and another summoned player. Finally, so happy about this. Now time to explore.

I fought them solo, and managed to snap both of my falchions half way through the second sentinel. I finished off the fight with my un-upgraded utility shortbow and about 100 arrows. I spent a good 10 minutes after the fight walking around the arena and doing the warcry emote, doing my best Ric Flair WOOOO irl.

this is perhaps the first thing that From has ever done that just strikes me as stupid.

Do yourself a favor and just spend 5 minutes making them extinct.

I assumed he was talking about the 3 archers that are right next to the bonfire. After about 3 deaths to the boss, I took those guys out for good.

I'm in Iron Keep and I sincerely regret doing a dual wield dex build. I have to cheese most of the normal encounters with my bow, because otherwise my 40 durability curved swords are too busted to finish off the boss.

My only option is to grind the enemies down to where they don't respawn any more.

It's poo poo like this that makes this game seem kinda poorly thought out compared to DS1

Uh, you could definitely gently caress up your build in DS1 as well. Only difference is now is that you can actually respec to redo your hosed up build.

I was talking more about the durability mechanic and bonfire placement/level design than actual builds. On my first DS1 play through, my build was a loving mess, but I still never felt like I was hitting my head against game mechanics like I am now.

I would respec to strength but I don't have shards left, so I would be stuck with un-upgraded weapons, and the place where I am stuck is where all the shards live.

I'm still going to do it, hell or high water, but it feels like this is Bad Difficult, where DS1 was Good Difficult.

Most covenants having an online factor is great, since it's the multiplayer that provides the lasting entertainment.

I, personally, disagree with this. Multiplayer is great, sure, but I can go through DS1 offline and not feel like I'm missing out on anything. The online stuff is just icing on the cake, you know, when it worked.

It feels like this game put too much effort into making sure the online functionality is smooth, and not enough into the actual game. That is what worries me. I have fond memories of Symphony of the Night and old rear end Everquest. I can still go back and relive those SotN memories, but the EQ ship has sailed into the sunset, and it ain't ever coming back.

I generally don't play games online, so that probably colors my opinion. I still think DS2 is a really good game, it's just kinda disappointing in some aspects.

Just fyi, in general, you can cheese a sh*tload of enemies by sniping with lightning spear from way out of range. Catches people offguard in pvp too if you get good at aiming.

This also applies to bows. If you are having trouble with a Dex character due to lovely weapons in the early game, don't sleep on the bow. I'm using a +2 Dragonrider bow on my pure dex character, and even with the goofy scaling, it is basically an (almost) free ticket through annoying normal encounters, like the mummies and goop monsters in Sinners Rise.

It's so easy it sometimes feels cheap, but I am making up for it by dual weilding the most honorable weapon class: the katana. Speaking of which, what is up with the katana power stance L2 attack? It is wicked awkward looking, and useless to the point where I feel like it is just a reference to some samurai movie I've never seen.

I don't understand. If I had a million souls on me, and wanted to enter the shrine of winter, I can? Do I keep the souls or are they spent getting in?

What difference does this make?

It is souls spent, there is a counter on the top right of your stat sheet. I got in with 3/4 bosses. There is some unique dialogue if you do this: The Emerald Herald basically tells you to turn your rear end around and kill the other bosses.

I'm winding up my first play through, and I'm wondering if there are any particularly useful places to burn a bonfire ascetic? I haven't used any yet, but I'm thinking about burning one in the titanite chunk farming area mentioned in the OP to get more chunks.
