Hello! I’m a ftm and I just had my baby shower on Saturday and was gifted a lot of clothes and essentials for my baby. On top of everything I was gifted I also got 4 bags of pure hand me downs from my baby brother who’s 2 and then clothes from my cousins who is also 2. I was told I was supposed to wash everything even the store bought clothes and since I’m 35 weeks pregnant I started to start packing my hospital bag and started getting ready for my baby arrival but my mom said washing all the clothes wasn’t necessary and just a waste of time. What do you guys think?

Definitely wash the clothes! If you trust that the hand-me-downs are clean then that is your call. But 100% wash the brand new clothing.
Think of all the people who have touched them and handled them prior to being purchased. Also, warehouses are known for having rats and mice that could’ve come into contact with the clothing.

My mum is making me wash and iron all clothes for the baby to sterilize them. I think ironing is not necessary unless you have a premie but I did it anyway

i definitely wash clothes, hand me downs and absolutely new stuff. She might have meant it for if you have a ton of hand me downs to not remove tags and wash the new stuff so you can see how much you use incase you want to return or exchange for different sizes. babies grow out of things so fast you dont need a ton

Definitely wash the clothes.
You don’t have to wash everything right now though! I would go through and pick out the newborn and 0-3 month clothes and get those washed. Then do the bigger sizes later as you need them. If you have the time and energy to wash everything, that’s great! But if not just do what you will need right away.

I would definitely wash all the hand me downs and the new clothing for sure. For starters you can just wash the sizes newborn and 0-3m (maybe a few 3-6m) now and wash the other sizes later, especially if it’s a ton of clothing but for sure wash everything.

I wouldn’t wash everything now. First go through it all and see what you want to keep, return or donate. Then just wash the newborn and 0-3months. Store the rest of it till the baby is older and then wash that size when needed.

I mean you could wash in sections. For example you don’t need to wash 12m to 2T clothing right away. If you have a lot and feel overwhelmed just start with up to 6 months.

I usually wash a handful of newborn and 0-3 month. I have a lot of clothes in storage and I just pull them out and wash as needed. I usually end up having about 10 outfits the first month that I rotate because they are comfy for baby. You really won’t use much and if you don’t wash the new stuff, you can regift those eventually if you want to.
